1. What is Nuclear Cardiac Perfusion Scan?
Nuclear Cardiac Perfusion Scan is a sophisticated heart scan using modern computer system and nuclear isotope to find out whether there are any significant blockages in the heart arteries. It can also detect the pumping function of the heart.
2. How is it performed?
Patient will exercise on the treadmill. At the peak of exercise, the doctor will inject the isotope which will lighten up the heart. A computerized scanning will then be performed in about 30 minutes. A second scanning without exercise will be done a few hours later. The test is performed at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
3. If I cannot exercise, can I have the test?
Yes. We can use an intravenous medication to replace the exercise part. The accuracy is the same.
4. Is the test safe?
It is a very safe test. The test is performed by a certified cardiologist and the risk is similar to the one with a regular treadmill exercise test.
5. Who should have the test?
Patients who have chest pain or any suspicion of having heart disease may need the test. Also patients who have heart disease before such as open heart bypass surgery or balloon procedure may need the test for follow-up. Ask your doctor for more information.
6. How long does the test take?
It takes 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Patients should not consume any food or drinks containing caffeine at least 10 hours before the test.
